Just In: JAMB approves 140 cut-off mark for varsity admissions, 100 for others

 

Candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria now have cause to smile as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has fixed the minimum cut-off marks for 2023.

What Is Jamb Cut-off mark.

Before we continue, we will like you to know the difference between Jamb Cut-off mark, school Cut-off mark and Departmental cut-off mark for every institution.

Jamb Cut-off mark

Jamb Cut off mark” is the Minimum Score one is permitted to score before being eligible to participate in any institute Post-utme e.g if kola score 130 in 2023 Jamb and Jamb place it's Cut-off mark at 140, it simply means kola is not eligible for admission into any Nigeria institute for that year.

Institute Cut-off mark

Every institution is at liberty to choose their own Cut-off mark after Jamb release her official Cut-off mark, but All institute are not allowed to fix Thier Cut-off mark lower than that released by Jamb, but they are free to, fix it higher than the official Jamb score.

So for you to be eligible to write any institute Post-utme, you must meet the institute official cut-off mark.

Departmental cut-off mark.

Departmental cut-off mark, this is the official Score every student applying for a particular course must attain or exceed before he or she can be considered for admission, In Other words  Departmental cut-off mark is the minimum score you need to be considered for admission into a course of study. And this score is determined by your Jamb and Post-UTME score.

THE Joint Admission and Matriculation Board – JAMB has finally announces the official cut off marks for Admissions into Nigeria Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

The Management board of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board – JAMB, has officially announced the 2023 cutoff marks for admission into ALL Nigerian Universities and Polytechnic, Including Colleges of Education admissions.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has set 140 and above as cut off mark for 2022/23 admissions into universities across the country.

The Registrar of the board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this during a presentation at the 2023 Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions and awards on Saturday in Abuja.

Oloyede said 100 had been approved as cut off mark into Polytechnics and Colleges of Education. He explained that the aforementioned points were the minimum, but that does not mean that institutions must comply with it.

 

How To Calculate Departmental cut-off mark.

NOTE: All Institutions do not have the same cut-off mark; as they each have their different departmental cut-off for each course which they may likely change with the changing academic session.

Method (1)

Let's say, you are aspiring for pharmacy in UNIBEN and they have their departmental cut-off for studying pharmacy set at 75.

So, let’s assume you scored 66 points in Post UTME and 250 in UTME since post UTME and JAMB are over 100 and 400 respectively.

So, let’s carry out the exercise and see if you are qualified to study pharmacy at the University of Benin.

1). First of all, you will have to divide your post UTME score by 2 which is 66/2=33

Also your jamb score by 8 which is 250/8=31.25

Add the two answers together which will be something like this 31.25+33=64.25

The arithmetic above proves that the aspiring UNIBEN candidate is not qualified to study pharmacy at UNIBEN despite having a good score.

So, the method for calculating your departmental cut-off mark for all schools with this method is to divide your jamb score by 8 and post UTME score by 2.

 Method (2)

This method doesn’t require students to write post UTME, it centers around pure screening

The only two things that will be required of you are your JAMB as well as your ‘O’ level result. Unlike others where you have departmental cut-off marks, this method doesn’t require any departmental cut-off marks, but the higher your JAMB score, the higher your chances of being admitted into the institution. Some of the Universities that employ this method include the Delta state university of science and technology Ozoro DSUST, University of Delta Agbor, also used this method in 2021 but did Post-UTME in 2022 and the University of ABUJA and Others.

 

 Method (3)

In this method the results from  your post UTME, jamb, and o level grades are used to calculate your departmental cut-off mark.

PROCEDURE:

On like the first and second method this method is more technical, but it's also very easy, but very confusing as Departmental cut-off mark will be deter from three different exam results as state earlier...

1. You will Divide your JAMB score by 8 as was done in the first method.

2. The Post-Utme grade, in this method are over 20.19.

3. Your o-level grades are total over 30.

How To Calculate Your O Level Grade For Admission

Every institutions only requires five subjects from  your O'LEVEL which must include  Maths and English and any other three subject relevant to the course You are applying for, also note most Nigeria Universities permit two sitting, by two sitting I mean combination of two O'LEVEL Result to get the required five subjects . 

You can visit Jamb website to check the admission O'LEVEL requirements for each course, based on University.

Most institutions whose O'LEVEL requirements is  only five o-level subjects have the A1 equal to 6 points.

 This simply means if you  score 5A”s in the required O'LEVEL subjects, then you have already had 30 marks.

A1 = 6 points

B2 = 5 points

B3 = 4 points

C4 = 3 points

C5 = 2 points

C6 = 1 point

Lets assume  a candidate  applying for civil engineering in Delsu and the departmental cut of mark is 70. Below is how to calculate the departmental cut-off mark with the third method

For instance, if the candidates JAMB score was 250 while the candidate scored 15 for post UTME and have 5As, in the required subject for civil engineering. Below is how his/her cutoff mark will be calculated.

Candidate Jamb -> 250/8=31.25

Candidate O'LEVEL result (5A = 5×6 point = 30)

 In this method, dividing the post UTME score is not required.

Next proceed to add the divided jamb score, O'LEVEL points and Post-utme score.

31.25+30+15=76.25.

From the end result of the calculation, this candidate is qualify to study Civil Engineering at DELSU.

Please Note This: scoring above the Departmental cut-off mark doesn't guarantee your Admission to any course or university , this is because, every course has its own admission quota, that's the total number of students they are permitted to admit in a particular course.
