University of Science and Technology, Ozoro Renamed Southern Delta University (SDU)

Delta State Governor Renames University of Science and Technology in Ozoro to Southern Delta University ( SDU)

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on September 11, 2024, officially renamed the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro, to Southern Delta University ( SDU), Ozoro. This decision marks a significant change for the institution, which has undergone various transformations since its establishment.

Originally founded as a College of Agriculture, the institution was elevated to a Polytechnic on January 1, 2002, under the administration of former Governor James Ibori. The move to establish it as a Polytechnic was part of broader efforts to enhance technical education in Delta State.

January 2021, then-Governor Ifeanyi A. Okowa announced plans to convert the Polytechnic into a full-fledged university, alongside two other educational institutions. The bill to formalize this transformation had its first reading in the Delta State House of Assembly on January 28, 2021, and by February of that year, the bill passed into law after review by the House Committee on Education.

While signing the bill, Governor Okowa emphasized the state’s commitment to providing a seamless educational pathway for students. He stated that students could progress from technical colleges to polytechnics and, ultimately, to the newly established University of Science and Technology.

Now, with the institution renamed Southern Delta University, Ozoro, it embarks on a new chapter in its mission to provide higher education opportunities in science and technology fields, serving the southern region of Delta State.
